Funeral Schemes and Wishes

Although it is challenging to talk and think about, it is helpful to know what should happen when a loved one dies. Knowing their preferences in advance will help you make decisions when they are needed. We hope to explain the arrangements for funerals, death and mourning to make them clear and understandable.

Progressive Judaism’s burial scheme

We work with 3 cemetaries:

  • Edgwarebury Lane: burial
  • Cheshunt: woodland burial
  • Hoop Lane: cremations

Ashes can be scattered at

Hoop Lane or interred at Edgwarebury (or somewhere private of your choosing).

By paying a yearly fee, Liberal Judaism’s scheme covers the cost of:

  • The coffin
  • The funeral
  • The burial
  • One night’s shiva
  • Loan of shiva chairs and prayer books

FPS Funeral scheme

FPS also has a funeral scheme, covering the cost of:

  • The hearse.
  • Moving the body from the place of death, to the mortuary, to the cemetery.

Cemeteries

Progressive Judaism maintains cemeteries at Edgwarebury and Cheshunt.

  • Edgwarebury: Burials take place in depth, the upper grave is available for either a partner or close relative. Reservations not available.
  • Cheshunt: Plots may be reserved at Cheshunt. You can have a woodland burial for an additional charge.
  • Hoop Lane: Cremations offered. Ashes can be scattered at Hoop Lane or interred at Edgwarebury (or somewhere private of your choosing) for an additional charge.

The grounds are maintained by Progressive Judaism for those already buried.

Memorial services are conducted before the High Holy Days.

Cost

  • Costs are added to your annual subscription every year.
  • Members’ children are included at no extra cost until they turn 21.
  • There is an over-age premium payable for those joining the scheme over the age of 55.

Mixed faith families

Non-Jewish partners of FPS members can be buried at Edgwarebury provided they too have joined the synagogue. At FPS we offer family membership with the option for both adults to pay the ground fee.

Young adults

At 21, young adults can become a synagogue member and join both the funeral and burial schemes for an additional cost.
