From Maureen Lobatto:
We've just had a week of Remembrance , firstly with the joint FPS/FRS evening event on the Wednesday, again on Shabbat morning when newly-returned Rabbi Rebecca and Danny Rich raised it, and Yom Hashoah UK’s Remembrance ceremony We Are One at Hyde Park on Sunday morning, 15th April, which Stanley and I attended.
Thankfully the April weather stayed dry and just about warm enough to sit in the open air, as near enough 1000 of us sat, stood and often clapped the uplifting speakers, cantors and choirs.
Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis spoke impactfully about the importance of Defiance and how Jews should no longer be Victims, echoed by Mayor Sadiq Khan and Israel’s Ambassador Mark Regev in the fight against anti-Semitism and “the Oldest Hatred” from whichever part of the world it comes.
There were particularly touching moments as the elderly survivors told of their harsh stories and how they’d transcended the effects, the Jewish Male Voice Choir singing the Partisan Song, In my own lifetime and joining with the Jewish Primary Schools Choirs to perform a new song “Never Again”, and “Oseh Shalom.
It was a very moving ceremony which takes place every year to ensure We must never forget the Shoah and the lessons we can take from it, nor happen Never Again for our and the next generation.
